Male Infertility Q & A

What is male infertility?

Male infertility means that a man isn’t able to successfully impregnate a female partner. Male infertility is typically due to the quantity or quality of sperm produced. If there isn’t a sufficient number of sperm in your semen, the chances of a sperm successfully reaching an egg and fertilizing it are reduced. Similarly, if your sperm are not strong or mobile enough, it is less likely that you will achieve conception naturally.

How is male infertility diagnosed?

Dr. Brody diagnoses male infertility with a physical exam and by testing a semen sample. Your semen sample is checked for quantity and quality of sperm. The physical exam allows Dr. Brody to assess your overall health and wellbeing and determine if any other health conditions or lifestyle habits contribute to your infertility issues.

What causes male infertility?

There are a variety of genetic, physical, and medical conditions that contribute to male infertility issues. For example, some men aren’t able to effectively produce sufficient amounts of quality sperm. The sperm may not develop fully or be abnormally shaped which can lead to mobility issues.

Other factors that can lead to male infertility include:

  • Infections
  • Varicoceles
  • Hormonal issues
  • Blockages in the vas deferens
  • Certain drugs or radiation

How is male infertility treated?

Male infertility treatment depends on the cause of the fertility issue. In some cases, Dr. Brody is able to help patients improve the quantity and quality of their sperm, while in other cases, assisted reproductive technology may be used to help patients successfully achieve pregnancy.

Dr. Brody works with you to ensure you are fit and healthy, which supports efficient sperm production. He might recommend changes to your diet and exercise habits as well as reducing alcohol consumption and stopping smoking.

In some situations, Dr. Brody relies on assisted reproductive technologies like intracytoplasmic sperm injections (ICSI). This is a specific form of IVF where a single sperm is carefully injected into a single egg to achieve fertilization. Techniques like this are used to ensure the sperm and egg join successfully to create an embryo for the implantation stage of IVF.
