Not Pregnant? When Should You Seek Help From a Fertility Specialist?

Not Pregnant? When Should You Seek Help From a Fertility Specialist?

Trying to get pregnant can be exciting, but when it doesn’t happen as quickly as you thought, it’s nothing short of frustrating.

The reality is that it can take several months — up to six even — for a healthy couple to conceive. An estimated 80% of couples conceive within six months of actively trying.

But what if it doesn’t happen on that timeline? When should you reach out to a fertility specialist? Knowing when to seek help from a fertility specialist can save you time, reduce stress, and improve your chances of conceiving.

Read on as Steven A. Brody, MD, PhD, and our Fertility & Lifespan Medical Institute team in San Diego, California, explain seven signs that it’s time to seek help from a fertility specialist.

1. You’ve tried for 12 months, and you’re under 35

If you’re under 35 and haven’t conceived after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse, it’s time to reach out to a fertility specialist. During an infertility evaluation, Dr. Brody can identify hidden issues like hormonal imbalances, ovulation problems, or mild structural issues with your uterus or fallopian tubes.

2. You’ve tried for 6 months, and you’re over 35

Fertility naturally declines with age. If you’re over 35, you don’t need to wait a full year. After six months of trying without success, schedule a consultation.

3. You’ve had recurrent miscarriages

Recurrent pregnancy loss may be linked to genetic factors, uterine abnormalities, hormonal imbalances, or immune system issues.

Dr. Brody can run targeted tests and help you create a plan to support a healthy pregnancy and prevent future miscarriages.

Note: If you’re currently experiencing a miscarriage, call Dr. Brody for an emergency appointment.

4. You have PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common cause of female infertility, and unfortunately, the number of PCOS-related infertility cases has doubled since the 1990s. If you have irregular periods, excess hair growth, weight challenges, or difficulty conceiving, PCOS could be the reason.

Dr. Brody can recommend treatment options, like medications to regulate ovulation, that improve your chances of getting pregnant.

5. You’re not sure what’s causing your infertility

Sometimes you know there’s a challenge, but you’re unsure of the cause. A fertility specialist like Dr. Brody can run tests to find the root issue.

Female factors for infertility include:

Male factors for infertility include:

In some cases, you may be dealing with both female and male infertility. That’s why testing is so important. Comprehensive infertility testing allows Dr. Brody to address infertility from all angles.

6. You’ve had testing and have identified issues

If tests have shown low sperm count, poor egg quality, blocked fallopian tubes, or other fertility-related problems, it’s important to get specialized care.

Sometimes, these issues may be detected during routine care for another issue, even if you haven’t started to try to grow your family. For example, you may not realize you have blocked fallopian tubes until you have an ultrasound for painful periods.

Dr. Brody can create a personalized plan that may include medications, assisted reproductive technologies, or lifestyle changes to optimize your chances of success.

7. You already know you need fertility help

Even before you go months trying to conceive, there may be times when you need to seek fertility help sooner.

This may apply to you if:

In these cases, you may want to address infertility before you’ve even started to try to expand your family. When in doubt, give us a call.
